Basketball/Volleyball Grading

 

  • 60% of your grade is the result of your physical participation in class. If you are participating, and following the rules, you are earning credit. It doesn’t matter if you’re a good player or not.
  • 40% of your grade comes from physical skill tests. You may choose to be graded for Basketball OR Volleyball. 
  • Each test is worth up to 8 points. You must earn the points by following each of the steps described below.

For Basketball:

Dribbling (2 points each)

  1. Making contact with the ball using your finger tips.
  2. Keeping your head up (eyes off of the ball).
  3. Demonstrate the ability to dribble high and low.
  4. Pass a defender 3 times in a game.

Passing (2 points each)

  1. Perform a chest pass.
  2. Perform a bounce pass.
  3. Perform an overhead pass.
  4. Perform any pass in a game 3 times.

Free Throw (2 points each)

  1. Hold the ball correctly.
  2. Use your legs for the shot.
  3. Extend your shooting arm and flex your wrist towards the basket.
  4. Perform two free throws in a row.

Jump Shot (2 points each)

  1. Hold the ball correctly.
  2. Jump.
  3. During the high point of the jump, extend your shooting arm and flex your wrist towards the basket.
  4. Perform two jump shots in a row, from different locations, at least 10 feet from the basket.

Defense (2 points each)

  1. Head up.
  2. Knees bent using short steps.
  3. Arms in motion.
  4. Defend successfully three times in a game.

For Volleyball:

Ready Position (2 points each)

  1. Knees bent.
  2. Eyes on the ball.
  3. Call for the ball.
  4. Move to the ball.

Serving (Underhand or overhand) (2 points each)

  1. Hold the ball and striking hand in start position.
  2. Toss/release ball.
  3. Strike the ball and follow through towards your target.
  4. Serve the ball successfully 3 times in a row.

Bumping (2 points each)

  1. Knees bent, and eyes on the ball.
  2. Contact ball on forearms, with elbows straight. Straighten knees.
  3. Bump the ball high, with control, 3 x in a row during practice.
  4. Bump the ball high, with control, 3 x in a row in a game.

Setting (2 points each)

  1. Knees bent, and eyes on the ball.
  2. Contact ball on finger tips, extend elbows on contact. Straighten knees.
  3. Set the ball high, with control, 3 x in a row during practice.
  4. Set the ball high, with control, 3 x in a row in a game.

Spiking (2 points each)

  1. Approach the ball.
  2. Jump.
  3. Strike the ball with your palm and follow through towards the net.
  4. Spike the ball successfully once in a game.
